Students driving drunk get citation, not DUI
An NBC2 investigation revealed Florida Gulf Coast University police give zero tolerance citations to drivers on campus – even those whose intoxication levels are three times the legal limit.
"The officer could know that the person is definitely under the influence, but because of the situation, because the person is cooperative, there hasn't been an accident, whatever the situation is, he believes the zero tolerance would serve the purpose, suspend drivers license for six months," said FGCU Police Chief Steven Moore.
Students given the citation can lose their license for six months.
Out of 10 drunk drivers caught on campus, six were given zero tolerance citations. All were all under 21 years of age, but registered at well over the legal limit.
